Fried Cabbage with Sausage

Servings: 4 ⏱️ Prep Time: 10 min | Cook Time: 25 min | Total Time: 35 min

Ingredients

  • 1 medium green cabbage chopped
  • 1 lb 450 g smoked sausage (like kielbasa), sliced into rounds
  • 1 medium onion diced
  • 2 cloves garlic minced
  • 2 –3 tbsp olive oil or butter
  • Salt to taste
  • Black pepper to taste
  • ½ tsp smoked paprika optional, for a smoky kick
  • ¼ tsp red pepper flakes optional, for heat

Equipment

  • Large skillet or sauté pan
  • Knife
  • Cutting board
  • Wooden spoon or spatula
  • Measuring spoons (optional)

Method

  1. Heat the pan: In a large skillet over medium heat, add 1 tablespoon of olive oil or butter.
  2. Brown the sausage: Add the sliced sausage and cook for 5–7 minutes, turning occasionally until browned. Remove and set aside.
  3. Sauté onion & garlic: In the same skillet, add a bit more oil if needed. Sauté the diced onion for 2–3 minutes until softened. Add garlic and cook for 30 seconds more.
  4. Cook the cabbage: Add the chopped cabbage to the skillet. Stir to coat in the oil and onion mixture. Season with salt, pepper, paprika, and red pepper flakes if using.
  5. Sauté until tender: Cover and cook for about 10–15 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the cabbage is tender and slightly caramelized.
  6. Combine & serve: Return the sausage to the pan. Stir everything together and cook for another 2–3 minutes until heated through. Adjust seasoning to taste.
  7. Serve hot and enjoy!

Notes

You can use turkey sausage, plant-based sausage, or even bacon instead of smoked sausage.
Add a splash of apple cider vinegar at the end for a tangy touch.
Leftovers store well in the fridge for up to 3 days and reheat easily.
